Hostas are shade loving perennials used mostly for their foliage with flower spikes of lavender shades to white appearing mid summer adding more interest. A couple hours of morning sun followed by filtered light under trees is the best location to enjoy Hosta. * When speaking about hours of sun for any shade planting we are normally talking about the amount of sun the bed receives during the months of June, July and August. |

Shade perennial beds with flowers are very difficult to do in our area. One thing we like is to mix: textures, heights and various shades of green to make an appealing and interesting shade planting. Mixing hosta, hardy ferns, liriope, cast iron plant, heuchera, and oxalis will give dimension and wide range of foliage for a shade planting. Add in some Impatiens for blooms and color to top it off creating a carefree woodland setting in your shaded garden. Hosta’s may be divided in the spring time after it has been established for a few years to spread around your garden or share with family and friends. Rich well drained soil is required for best performance in our area. |
