Rabbits:
Cute and fuzzy? NOT!!!! Rabbits are with us year around, but we usually only see the damage during the winter months when most of the other vegetation and plants are either dormant or less appealing, leaving Pansies the freshest sweetest and obviously the tastiest to the rabbits. We have had thousands of requests over the years on what to do about rabbits eating pansies. We finally have a product called "Predator" that is supposed to work. We have not had experience ourselves and this is our first year to carry it. "predator" came highly recommended from a couple of local golf courses that have had good success using it. "Predator" is encapsulated crystals that you drop about three feet apart around the perimeter of the planting area. Once the capsules get wet they expand into a crystal like gel that repels the rodents with an odor that is mostly undetectable to people. The package treats approximately 750sq feet and we sell the box for $19.95. We have this in stock now. |
Winter Pansies:
For some homeowners it has been difficult to pull out the spring annuals, especially since the mild fall weather with abundant rain had them looking better than they did all summer long. But with the first freeze for our area it is a perfect time to plant winter color and Pansies. Along with the freeze, many beds that were shaded by trees for the summer have finally dropped enough leaves to become sunny enough to allow Pansies to thrive and grow.
Although Pansy season around this area begins in mid October we are lucky to live in climate that allows up to plant annuals almost year round. Planting winter pansies in December, January and even into February and March is perfectly fine.
As with any other time of the year getting the beds well prepped with plenty of landscape mix, compost and soil amendments is a key to success for growing healthy vigorous pansies. |
Fertilize: "Colorstar"
"Colorstar" fertilizer will last about 3 months this time of year and supply the flowers with blood meal, bone meal and all the other nutrients in a time released fertilizer needed for optimal root growth, healthy plants and an abundance of blooms. To apply to a new bed sprinkle across the area to be planted at a rate of about 1lb per 2 flats of flowers. To top dress a bed that is already planted, sprinkle across the top of the beds, and rinse well with water hose to wash the material off of the leaves. Around the middle of February add an additional application to provide an additional boost for the early spring flush and growth. |
Cyclamen:
Cyclamen enjoy our cooler winter temperatures, but do not like a hard freeze. For nights that are supposed to dip down into the mid / upper 20's or below, remember to cover with light sheet or blanket to help insulate them. Pansies normally do not require covering and many times perform better when left alone as long as the bed is adequately moist and not bone dry. |
Shrubs:
You (customers) asked for them, we began stocking them. Thank you for the input and we are glad you asked us to start carrying them. It has taken us a few years to get our "mix" and selection fine tuned and will always be tweaking the assortment to keep the best quality and selection for the shrubs that perform the best in our area. This past week we received three more fresh shipments and still have them marked at 50% off. Planting shrubs during the fall and winter months are one of the best times of the year. The cooler temperatures and added moisture ensure that the plants have time to start getting established before the summer heat sets in. |
Hours:
Although our winter hours are scaled back we still pride ourselves on being THE destination for all your flower and bedding plants needs. If it is impossible to make it to our location during our Winter hours please do not hesitate to contact us and we will try and work out an arrangement to take care of our valued customers.
