There is a lot going on at The Flower Ranch this late summer and early fall.

We still have all of our shrubs, trees, and vines on sale for 50% off.

  • Our ornamental grasses are ready to go and some are even blooming.
  • We have a great selection of perennials and hostas ready.
  • Our garden mums are well on their way, right on schedule they should be ready in mid September.
  • Fall petunias are a week or two away.
  • Marigolds, snapdragons, and dianthus are close, as well.

Fall Petunia: What!? My petunias burned up at the first sign of summer and  you think they will live now?  OH YEA, and for those beds that have flamed out and need a little splash of color until pansies, petunias are the answer. A fresh crop, with new vigor, planted now will thrive and flourish until the first good freeze.

Garden Mums: Normally ready about mid September, garden mums just scream     Autumn and signify the changing of the season. For the best results, a mum with tight blooms (almost no color showing, the buds are just cracking) will give you weeks of more color, when they bloom.  Get them planted early to enjoy a longer display of harvest colors.

Marigolds: Are not day length sensitive like the mum and have no bloom cycle, meaning they will bloom until the first good frost. The orange and yellow cant be beat for autumn tones and color.

Snapdragons and Dianthus: Planted in the fall they show off, thrive, and bloom well into the fall and early winter. It is not the cold that slows them down, it is the short day lengths (lack of sunshine hours) that halt most of the blooms.  They remain green and have foliage for the winter and as the days lengthen during the spring they re-bloom and go to town again. The dianthus will survive our summers, where the snaps may flame out during the heat of next year depending on where they are planted.

Stop by in the next few weeks, and freshen up the garden. September is just around the corner and normally our night temperatures begin to cool off a few degrees and plants LOVE it.

If you have some plants that “are alive” but that is about it, do not hesitate to trim them back some, shape and prune then while cleaning them up. Sometimes a little TLC is all a plant needs to revive with new vigor and go gang busters until it is time for the pansy change.
